One person was burnt to death and another suffered severe burns when the Bantama Market in Kumasi was gutted by fire in the early hours of Sunday.
About 500 stalls and stores with goods worth billions of cedis were destroyed in the fire which took personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service about five hours to bring under control.
The cause of the fire is not immediately known. The deceased, a woman and the wounded, a man, were said to be sleeping in one of the burnt stores.
The yet to be identified man is under intensive care at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.
Mr Emmanuel Owusu-Ansah, Ashanti Regional Minister, has visited the scene and consoled the affected store owners.
He hinted of the setting up of a committee that will investigate the incident and submit a report to his ffice within a fortnight.
Some of the victims who interacted with the Times called for the early reconstruction of the market.
