A Benz 207 bus that malfunctioned at the brakes has killed some four hawkers selling Ghana 2008 wares at Kaneshie and injured several others at first light, Kaneshie, on the Accra-Winneba road.
According to the eyewitness, the Benz bus was heading towards Accra from Kasoa with great speed. Its lost its brakes and skidded onto the pavement, killing instantly the first hawker who was selling Ghana flags and hitting a BMW salon car, which consequently crushed and squeezed two other cars.
It was reported that passengers on board the Benz bus from Kasoa, got down at the Darkuman Junction, after realising that the bus had problems with its brakes.
The passengers said they alighted at Darkuman because all attempts to make the driver stop the bus and fix the problem, proved futile.
Fortunately for them, the accident involving the driver and his mate, left alone in the bus, occurred almost immediately after they alighted.
While some of the victims died instantly and some were in critical condition, others passed away later at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.
The driver and his mate who managed to do a ‘hit and run’, are being ‘hot chased’ by the Odorkor Police.
This accident seemed to have confirmed the fears of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) that street trading is dangerous and efforts must be made to put a halt to the ever growing situation.
