Mr. Noble Appiah, Acting Director of the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) on Wednesday called on the Police to strengthen its collaboration in the collection and analysis of road traffic data. "The present system of road traffic crash data collection is not only expensive but time consuming as well and also an important component in shaping policy formulation and the enforcement of tactics in combating road accidents." Speaking during the presentation of road safety equipment to the Traffic Unit of the Ghana Police Service, Mr Appiah said as part of the NRSC's Strategy in combating road accidents, all efforts would be made to support and build both human and technical capacities in the enforcement of traffic regulations. The equipment valued at 70,000 GH cedis included alcohol sensors, speed radar guns, vehicle height gauges, reflective jackets and reflective buttons. He said very soon, the NSRC would hold discussions with the Police Administration with the aim of introducing road safety modules in both the Police Training School and the Police College. "The NRSC will support these institutions with course content development, resource persons and materials", he added. Mr. Appiah expressed appreciation to the Road Fund and DANIDA for providing funds for the equipment. Sarcozy Company, dealers in fire and safety equipment also presented mobile barricade valued at 900 Ghana cedis to the Ghana Police Service. Mr. Yaw Adu Gyimah, Commissioner of Police in-charge of Services who received the equipment expressed his gratitude to the NRSC for its assistance to the Police, adding that the equipment would help the Police tremendously in its efforts in reducing road accidents. "The budget of the Police was so tight that it did not make provisions for such equipment and therefore this gesture is much welcome", he added.
