Sheba Agbeve, 19, is in the grips of the police for allegedly dumping her one-year-old baby boy into a public toilet on Wednesday at Abor near Akatsi in the Volta Region.
Also arrested was Agbeve’s friend, Efua Suetor, 22, who was believed to have connived with the suspect to commit the crime.
Some ladies who went to toilet heard of the cry of the baby and informed some neighbours about it and they used a ladder to enter the pit to remove the baby.
The baby who was removed completely covered with faeces is receiving treatment at the Sacred Heart Hospital at Abor.
The police at Abor told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that Agbeve, a junior high school graduate who lived at Tsiame, near Abor with Suetor, her friend, confided in Suetor her plan to get rid of the baby to enable her cling on to a newfound lover.
The two suspects on January 21, this year at about 0400 hours, at Abor dump the baby into the pit latrine.
The Police said as the news spread in town, a resident who suspected Agbeve of committing the crime reported her to the police.
The plot according to police initial investigation was to enable Agbeve to elope with a newly found lover to Accra, in view of the economic hardship at home.
Mr. Isaac Addo, Assistant Superintendent of Police in charge of Akatsi district confirmed the incident and said investigations were going on.Source: GNA
