Some senior journalists have endorsed the candidature of Alexander Akwasi Acquah, who is contesting in the parliamentary primary of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Akyem Oda in the Eastern Region.
Veteran Broadcaster, Kwami Sefa Kayi, host of ‘Kokrokoo’ morning show on Peace FM declared that Mr Acquah, who once worked with him as his producer, was better placed to serve the people of Akyem Oda as their MP.
“[Akyem] Oda is Akwasi Acquah, no matter what you do, it’s for Akwasi Acquah,” he stated emphatically in Twi on the programme.
Similarly, host of Ekosii Sen, Ghana’s most-listened-to political talkshow, Philip Osei Bonsu known also as OB, as well as his colleague Omanhene Kwabena Asante who hosts Badwam on Adom TV, say the delegates should vote for Alexander Akwasi Acquah as the NPP’s candidate for the area ahead of the December elections.
According to them, having heard accounts from citizens of the area about development projects the aspirant has undertaken which have brought relief to them, they would be surprised if the delegates overlook him for another person.
Akwasi Acquah as he is popularly known has pledged to donate half of his salary to towards the establishment of a fund to cater to the developmental needs of the area if he becomes the MP.
The businessman has also promised to share his allocation of the MPs’ Common Funds among all 18 electoral areas that make up the Akyem Oda constituency if the NPP delegates give him the nod to lead the party into the 2020 parliamentary election.
The Chief Executive of The Community Hospitals Group further indicated that he will ensure the elected Assembly members, who are the agents of development at the local level, lead his development agenda in the constituency.
“Common Fund is one of the commonest funds available to every Member of Parliament. Whilst others are propagating the cancellation of it because they don't see the use and benefit of it, I have decided to fairly allocate it to the 18 electoral areas in the Akyem Oda constituency.
“Accountability of the quarterly fund will be the responsibility of elected assembly members of these electoral areas under the responsibility of my party's electoral area coordinators,” he said.
The primary is set for April 25, 2020, and Mr Acquah is contesting with three others including the incumbent, William Agyapong Quaittoo.
Ahead of that, Mr. Acquah, a Journalist and former Spokesperson of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), plans to pay a courtesy call on some notable personalities in the country.
These include former Education Minister, Prof Christopher Ameyaw Akumfi, former NHIA Chief Executive, Ras Boateng as well as President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Roland Affail Monney.
