A pastor, Rev. Tetteh Djangma says prostitution should not be legalised in Ghana.Reacting to an earlier suggestion by an academic at the University of Cape Coast (UCC) Prof. Dominic Agyeman that commercial sex work should be legalised in Ghana, he said legalising the sex trade is not the answer.The Senior Fellow at the UCC, Prof. Agyeman, said commercial sex work was a social fact that could not be wished away, adding that legalizing the practice will enable government to control and avert child prostitution.Speaking earlier on Joy News, he noted that government’s efforts at dealing with the problem of child prostitution will continue to yield little result if the practice is not legalised.Advancing his argument further, Rev. Djangma asked whether the use of marijuana and armed robbery should also be legalised because the state is unable to control these deviant activities?While agreeing that no society is free of deviants, he thinks that the problem of commercial sex workers should be tackled at the roots.He suggests that the women and girls who are involved in the trade should rather be assisted by the state to learn income generating trades so that they could earn some money to fend for themselves.
