WBC welterweight champion Floyd “Money” Mayweather today hosted a press conference to formally announce his upcoming pay-per-view matchup against Marcos “El Chino” Maidana taking place on May 3, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
“People say ‘why did I choose Maidana over Khan?’ Look at his last four fights and look at Khan’s last four fights. I had to go with the best choice and [Maidana] has made a big impact on boxing in his last fight,” said Mayweather.
Floyd said he will fight three more times after the Maidana fight and he doesn’t know who the opponents will be. “You know who I said I wanted on the undercard [Adrien Broner vs. Amir Khan]. You wanna fight me? Earn it. You wanna fight me? You gotta earn it. Some may not earn it. I may just pick them because I want to.
“Floyd Mayweather is not scared of no opponent. I don’t duck or dodge nobody, but I earned my stripes. So I can pick and choose who I want to pick and choose. I fight who I want to fight. Nobody is forced to watch me.”
Tickets went on sale Saturday morning for Mayweather-Maidana and Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer said 14,000 of 16,000 seats have been sold, with $12 million already in the bank.
Floyd also mentioned that possible future opponent Erislandy Lara will face Ishe Smith on May 2.
Marcos Maidana did not attend the press conference, remaining in Argentina where his wife is expecting any day. Maidana’s trainer Robert Garcia was on hand and said a few words.
