The Ghana Rugby Football Union demonstrated rugby as the new Olympics sport to the youth of Ghana during the celebration of the 2014 Olympics Day organised by the Ghana Olympics Committee.

Held at the Nicholson Stadium, Burma Camp on Saturday, 21st June 2014, this year’s event, which attracted about 200 pupils from Garrison Schools, demonstrated Olympic Sports such as Rugby, Kick Boxing and Fencing.

The Ghana rugby was well represented by a team led by Secretary General Francis Asare and coach Abdul Samad.  Others from the rugby family who attended the programme included coach Eric,  coach Hassan Osman coach Abdul Mueze from Tamale, Hudu Ibrahim, Joseph Bulley and Emmanuel Doe as well as children from Teshie and Madina Zurak.

Interestingly, rugby was supposed to be the second Olympic sport to be demonstrated but overwhelmed by the sheer number of children, players and preparation being done by Ghana Rugby, organizers rescheduled the programme and asked the rugby players to exhibit their talent their sport last with an extended time allocated to Ghana Rugby.

Before Ghana Rugby started its demonstration coach Samad asked the children to clear the field from every rubber and object on the field to also demonstrate the values of the Rugby Family.

The Ghana Rugby demonstration was introduced with the Ghana version of the famous All Black “Haka” followed by the senior players demonstrating some set pieces in rugby, line-out, scrum, scoring a try and open play.

This was followed by a two set of 5 children mixed with girls who played Tag Rugby. The day ended with the organizers declaring Rugby as the “sport of the day”.

The day ended with a Musical Chair competition for the children and the Ghana Rugby kids stole the show taking most of the awards: Adjetey Ernest - 1st position in the boys contest, Adjetey Alberta, Doreen Adjetey and Deborah Sowah placed 1st, 2nd and 4th positions respectively in the girls contest.

Mr. Herbert Mensah, President of the GRFU even though he could not make it to the programme was delighted by the excellent work done by the technical team led by Mr. George Ladipo.

“A new era for Ghana Rugby was introduced by this excellent work done by Abdul Samad and all those involved. Rugby is not just a sport, but indeed a family of people who value life and the benefits that it brings such as having fun, developing, performing and competing,” he remarked.
