The National Democratic Congress (NDC) on Monday congratulated the Volta River Authority (VRA) on the "patriotic spirit" exhibited in alerting the authorities and the public to the risk of flooding from the White Volta.
A statement issued by Hanna Tetteh, NDC Communication Director said VRA used its wealth of knowledge about the White Volta to share its knowledge with the people of Ghana and especially the people of the three northern regions.
"The Current situation reinforces the position of the NDC regarding the inappropriateness of creating a separate Bui Dam Authority without any linkage to the Volta River Authority," it said.
The statement said the situation in respect to the Bagre Dam in Burkina Faso also made it critical to ensure intense collaboration between Ghana and its neighbours in respect of energy supply and hydrological issues, "something which the NDC has always considered vitally important".
"The NDC wishes to encourage the Volta River Authority to continue to provide leadership with regard to this issue, and act in a proactive manner. "We believe that by so doing we can ensure that if there is indeed any loss incurred by the people who live along the banks of the White Volta as a result of flooding, the impact is reduced as much as possible due to the early warnings the VRA has so thoughtfully provided."
