The Principal of Bolgatanga Polytechnic, Professor Paul Tanzubil on Thursday called on the Government to increase the budgetary allocation of the country's Polytechnics to enable them to carry out their assigned roles effectively.
The call was contained in a speech read for him during a three-day leadership capacity building workshop organised by the Dutch Government in collaboration with the University of Cape Coast for the Management and Department Heads of Polytechnic institutions in Bolgatanga.
The workshop was under the theme; "Improving Polytechnic Education Through Effective Middle Level Management"
He explained that Polytechnic education was expected to develop the knowledge and skills of beneficiaries through rigorous practical training, and this needed greater commitment and funding from Government.
Professor Tanzubil expressed concern about the current low level of funding of polytechnics from the Government and noted that this was hampering teaching, learning and research.
He said for this year, out of a total of about 65.5 billion cedis approved by the Government for the tertiary education sector for Administrative expenses, only 8.9 billion cedis representing 13.6 per cent was allocated to the 10 Polytechnics in the country.
"The allocation for investment in the Polytechnics is even more pathetic, with the highest getting only 300 million cedis.
"There is the need to address the situation if we want to progress", he said.
He appealed to the Government and other donor partners in the educational sector to assist the country's polytechnics to enable them to perform their duties effectively.
