Black Stars stand in captain Andre Ayew says he has to prepare himself to lead the team to victory in Saturday’s 2015 African Nations Cup qualifier against Uganda in Kampala in the absence of injured substantive team captain Asamoah Gyan.
Speaking to reporters after the team trained at the Accra Sports Stadium on Tuesday afternoon, Ayew noted that getting the three points would be the team’s number one priority.
“With the captain (Gyan) not around, I think what is important is to prepare myself to try and lead the team to get a victory for Ghana. What is important is Ghana and hopefully, we will do our best and bring victory home.”
Ayew noted that it would be unseemly for the Black Stars to be scared of Uganda, despite the 1-1 draw between both sides in Kumasi two months ago.
He added that the Cranes would not be underrated at all, noting that the concentration and hard work with a will to die for the country are attributes that would carry his teammates and himself through.
“If today, Ghana gets scared of Uganda, then I think we should ask ourselves questions. With all due respect to Uganda, they came here and got a point so it’s not a team to underrate at all – a difficult team to play, with good players but what they have done or are doing is not our concern.
We need to concentrate and train hard for this game and I believe any player called is prepared to ‘die’ for the country to make the people proud.
The team will fly out of Ghana on Thursday evening and will quickly make a return after the game to Ghana.
