The government of Ghana has renewed its commitment to the ideals of the United Nations, particularly towards global peace and stability.
Deputy Foreign Minister, Ambassador Kwesi Quartey told a Mock United Nations General Assembly Session in Accra that government was strengthening its collaboration and partnership with the world body to ensure the achievement of the basic aims of the organisation.
The Mock UN Session was organised by Life-Link Friendship Schools Ghana to select Ghana’s delegation for next year’s Global Mock Model UN Sessions to be held at the UN Headquarters in New York and at the US State Department in Washington DC in April 2016.
Over 200 school children from selected schools in Accra, Tema and other regions took part in the one-day session which deliberated on wide range of issues including security, terrorism, and child protection under the theme “The threat of terrorism and the protection of children”.
Life-link Ghana organises Model United Nations conferences for students at all educational levels with the aim of developing practical leadership skills in youth. The conference was organised in partnership with the Foreign Affairs Ministry and the United Nations office in Ghana as part of the activities to commemorate UN Day in Ghana
Students act as diplomats representing various UN member countries and agencies.
The Minister for Youth and Sports, Mahama Ayariga hailed the Model United Nations program as educative program that develops the leadership skills of participants.
Mr Ayariga recounted his own participation in such a program when he was a student and believes that the learning experience he had contributed to his development in leadership today.
The Executive Director of Life-link Friendship Schools Ghana, Ernest Gyimah-Danquah announced that institution initiated the “UN Youth Delegate” program to develop Ghanaian youth to represent Ghana on the side-lines of the annual UN General Assembly sessions. The program, he said will include a TV show to showcase the potential of Ghanaian youth in the area of critical thinking, team work, diplomatic leadership and international relations in practices.
The UN Day conference ended with the selection of the overall best delegate who will be sponsored among others to the Global Classrooms Model UN conference in the USA next year.
