FIFA says its ethics committee has banned a football official from India for three years for taking a bribe.
FIFA says Alberto Colaco, the former general secretary of the Indian football federation,“accepted a payment in the context of the elections” for Mohamed bin Hammam’s executive committee seat in 2009.
Bin Hammam beat Sheikh Salman Bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa of Bahrain 23-21 in an election marred by allegations of vote-buying from both candidates’ supporters.
FIFA says Colaco was India’s voting delegate at the election in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. FIFA says Colaco violated several rules, including bribery and corruption.
Sheik Salman eventually won a FIFA board seat in May 2013 after Bin Hammam was banned for life by the ethics committee for financial wrongdoing involving Asian Football Confederation accounts.
