The first leg of the Greater Accra pool A round of league matches of the ongoing Ghana Rugby Club Championships (GRCC) 2014/15 came to an end on Saturday November 29th on the Accra Rugby Pitch in Legon, with a lot of excitement.

The first game of the day saw Accra Sharks RFC, take on Cosmos Buffaloes RFC. This feature was more like a 'David vs Goliath' battle with Cosmos Buffaloes, the log leaders, running riot scoring try after try from the start of the game to the final whistle. Accra Sharks to the surprise of everyone, proved a little tough in the first 20 minutes of the game, scoring two tries, but they could not hold Cosmos Buffaloes off for too long. The Buffaloes won the game comfortable by 62 points to 10 and further increased their lead on the log Table before the break.

Coach Amuzolouh of Cosmos Buffaloes, was very excited, citing the fact that, with this emphatic win, Buffaloes are in clear contention to win the first league Title under the new President of GRFU, Mr. Herbert Mensah. "We are very excited for this win and this clearly shows how eager we are to win the first Rugby league championship under the new leadership."

The second game was arguably the toughest game of the day, between Legon Titans and Idas Sports. Both teams had lost one game prior to kick off, incidentally to the log leaders Cosmos Buffaloes, and were both looking to secure the second position on the log before the end of the first leg, to put either of them in title contention of the league.

The match began with Legon Titans scoring the first try by Emmanuel Kalos, after a superb work of brilliant passing between himself and the winger of the side, Prince Segbefia. Their good play had the coach of Idas acknowledging their effort with a clap. Idas came back strong and scored a try to level out the scores.

The game proceeded with both teams clearly showing their determination to win the game at all cost, but Idas sports further increased their scoring when the full back of Legon Titans, mistimed a free ball coming his direction, allowing Abdul Samad of Idas sports, who was lurking right behind him, to intercept and score a try.

After the recess, Legon Titans came back strong to score a few more tries to level out the points but it was 'brains' that reigned supreme over 'beauty', as Idas Sports had the last laugh, when Marshall Nortey, the captain of Legon Titans, failed to convert a kick that would have enabled his side win the game in the dying minutes. The game ended 17 to 18 points in favour of Idas Sports enabling them to secure the second position on the log.

Abdul Samad of Idas Sports was elated about his team’s victory since on average, his team has the oldest set of players in the competition. Legon Titans, on the other hand, have the youngest average players in the tournament.

Abudul Samad said, "Clearly we have proven that experience is important in rugby. We knew the ability of Titans (Legon) coming into this game but we counted on our 'well' of experience to beat them. Now we are going to prepare for the second leg next year and Inshallah, it will be good."

The final game of the day was between Tema Anchors and Dansoman Hurricanes, who have inevitably found their winning form back, winning their second game of the season. Hurricanes beat the Anchors comfortably by 69 point to 7.

Going into the second Leg of the GRCC Pool A games next year, this is how the league stands. Cosmos Buffaloes still sit on the summit having won all 5 of their games this season with 23 points followed by Idas Sports with 18 points. Legon Titans drop to the 3rd position after losing in succession to Cosmos Buffaloes and Idas sports with 16 points, Dansoman Hurricanes 4th with 11 points, Accra Sharks 5th with 2 points and at the bottom of the summit, Accra sharks with no points.

Exciting Rugby continues next year on January 17th as the second leg of the 2014/15 of the Ghana Rugby Club Championship (GRCC) comes off on the Accra Rugby Pitch in Legon.

Mr Herbert Mensah, President of the Ghana Rugby Football Union, said that he was impressed with what he saw after attending the last matches of Round One in Accra.

“Even though there is a long road to walk for Ghana Rugby I am confident, based on what I observed today, that my Board’s directive towards professionalism in building the Rugby Family in Ghana is starting to pay off,” Mr Mensah said.

Mr Mensah also outdoored the GRCC 2014/15 trophy together with trophies for top try scorer and most voted player as well as medals for the teams in the finals of GRCC 2014/15.
