An Accra Circuit Court has refused to grant bail to businessman Alhaji Mohammed Dawood over the raging cocaine scandal.
Alhaji Dawood has been in the custody of the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) since this week for his involvement in the Nayele cocaine bust saga.
He is alleged to have assisted in Nayele Ametefeh’s easy passage through the Kotoka International Airport’s VIP lounge.
Miss Ametefe was arrested at Heathrow carrying 12.5 kilograms of cocaine.
The Circuit Court has adjourned Alhaji Dawood’s case to December 8.
Joy News’ Kwakye Afreh Nuamah who was at the Accra Circuit Court said the hearing lasted about five minutes.
The prosecution told the court that the BNI has not concluded its investigation into the matter, and therefore needed him to remain in custody.
The prosecution was convinced Dawood has strong connections at the VVIP section of the airport, which they claimed enabled him to secure passage for Nayele, Afreh reported.
But Addo Atuah, counsel for Mohammed Dawood argued that there is no evidence that his client aided Nayele to get the cocaine through the VVIP.
He also discounted media reports that his client was trailed and arrested by the BNI. Rather, he said, Alhaji Dawood turned himself in when the issue broke out.
Addo Atuah explained that his client was in Nigeria when Nayele’s arrest became public and he quickly dashed down to Ghana and presented himself voluntarily to the BNI when he heard he was wanted.
Alhaji Dawood appeared worried by the accusations leveled against him but looked calm in the courtroom today, Afreh observed.
