The Police Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) will begin an exercise after the Easter holidays, to arrest and prosecute commercial drivers and private drivers whose vehicles have tinted windscreens.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Daniel Julius Avorga, the National MTTU Commander, who disclosed this' to the Times yesterday, said police have sufficient evidence that, some people use such vehicles to transport Indian hemp and narcotic drugs which fuel crime in the country.
That apart, he said, some of these vehicles are used for other nefarious activities such as illicit sex and for stealing.
ACP Avorga, therefore, advised drivers with tint films on their glasses to remove them before the exercise starts.
He said an earlier exercise to check the use of tinted glasses on vehicles in 1974 was abandoned years later, when the police were withdrawn from the roads.
ACP Avorga said the penalty for default in the use of tinted vehicle glasses is 100 penalty unit per offender which works to GH¢ 12.00 a unit.
He said, however, that vehicles whose window screen are already tinted by the manufacturers, are not affected by this exercise.
