Some Nigerians are crying foul over what they describe as exorbitant mortuary fees being demanded at the Police Hospital.The group, numbering about 50 and clad in red and black clothes, is demanding the immediate release of the body of their colleague for burial after his murder last month by his Nigerian girlfriend.The hospital authority has however refused to hand over the corpse to the group, demanding an additional $1000, but the group is not budging to the latest request.The Nigerians told Joy FM’s Sammy Darko that they had made part payment of $300 of the total fees on Monday and were only there to collect the corpse for burial since preparations for the rite were far advanced.The group is insisting that the body is either released for burial or the hospital should refund their $300 and keep the corpse.The President of Niger Delta Association in Ghana, said they could not pay the additional $1000 because “we think the money is on the high side”.“We don’t have that amount of money; it is a corpse, what do we do with it, if they refuse us burying it we will leave it for them; at the end of the day the authorities would do mass burial…we want to leave our brother and go.”Meanwhile the hospital authorities say the charges are in accordance with regulations of the mortuary and asked the group to channel their grievance to the director of the hospital.Story by Isaac Essel/myjoyonline.com
