Mr. Joe Gidisu, Minister of Transport, has announced a number of measures being undertaken by his ministry to ease vehicular traffic on roads linking the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange.He said on Thursday that, hopefully, by the end of April, construction works on Tetteh Quarshie-Madina road would be opened for “effective flow of traffic”. Commuters would no longer meander through Emmanuel Eye Clinic before joining the main road again, he assured.He was speaking on Peace FM, and announced that the management of the Accra Mall have promised to sponsor 60% of the about GH¢200,000 cost of engineering works on roads close to the mall. He hoped traffic on the immediate environs of the mall would be completed within the next three months.He said by the end of the year, the road stretching from Teshie through Spintex to Tetteh Quarshie would be completed.The Minister described driving on these roads early mornings and late evenings as a “menace”.Mr Gidisu said all unauthorized entries to the Accra - Tema Motorway would also be taken care of.He said an overhead bridge would be built across the railway lines near the Teshie Police Station area to speed up traffic flow. Along the same corridor, he announced that another underground passage would be constructed to add up to the existing one that leads to East Legon.Furthermore, the Transport Minister said the government would be checking on makeshift markets along the country’s highways to save the government from paying huge sums of money in the name of compensation to “illegal squatters”. He called for a concerted effort from relevant government agencies in that direction.He assured contractors working on government projects that they would be paid promptly.The Vice President, John Mahama had earlier paid a working visit to roads around the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange to assess progress of work.Story by Isaac Essel/Myjoyonline.com
