Preliminary investigations into the cause of the fire outbreak at the Kokomba market, on Friday reveals the blaze could have been caused by “unattended-to naked fire,” officials at the Ghana National Fire Service have said.
The fire outbreak brought to two the number of market fire disasters in the country in a week.
The Kokomba market incident followed closely on the heels of an earlier outbreak of fire at the Kumasi Central Market which destroyed several shops.
Fire service authorities say there are at least three outbreaks yearly at the Kokomba market.
Speaking to Joy News, Osafo Affum, at the Public Relations department of the GNFS said the service believes a naked fire made by an unknown squatter at the market could have the cause of the disaster.
From a far distance, Myjoyonline cameras could capture thick black smoke billowing into the skies.
Joy News’ Yaa Asamoah who had been reporting live from the area on Friday observed that heat from the blaze could be felt 50 metres away.
Fire service personnel are said to have arrived at the scene only after a substantial portion of the market had been razed.
It is still unknown the exact cause of the tragedy but GNFS officials say thorough investigation continues.
