Presidential Spokesperson, Mahama Ayariga has described the resurgence of violence in Bawku over the weekend, leading to the imposition of a 24-hour curfew as embarrassing. He expressed regret that violence erupted only days after the leaders of the two factions assured President J.E.A. Mills of their commitment to peace. At meeting in the Upper East regional capital, Bolgatanga, leaders of the Kussasis and Mamprusis told the president they were committed to ensuring peace in the area. They emphasised the need for action to be taken against those who disturb the peace. The leaders wanted such persons to be dealt with according to the law and also expressed worry at difficulties in accessing essential facilities located in the stronghold of opposing sides. The president promised to look into their concerns and to find lasting solutions to the protracted chieftaincy crisis. But barely two days after the meeting, renewed clashes led to the killing of Sulemana Ibrahim.“The president did give all the sides an opportunity to be heard…it is rather unfortunate that after within 24 hours we could have such deterioration in the situation and we feel very embarrassed about it,” Mr Ayariga lamented. He told Joy News’ Bernard Saibu, the reinforcement is hoped to calm the situation. The Upper East Regional Minister, Mr Mark Wayongo said there is relative calm in the Bawku metropolis following the imposition of the 24-hour curfew. The Regional Security Council is meeting to deliberate further measures to contain the situation.Story by Malik Abass Daabu/Myjoyonline.com
