The Public Utility Regulatory Commission (PURC), has resolved to impose sanctions on utility providers for poor services rendered the public. Citing electricity providers as the worse offender, the Commission said the move has become necessary as a result of persistent disruptions in utility supplies. The PURC said despite assurances by the utility companies, there have been too many power interruptions in recent times. The Commission Wednesday summoned heads of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCO), and the Volta River Authority (VRA) to explain the reasons for their inefficiencies. According to Joy News’ Sammy Darko who sat through the meeting, the VRA explained they have no problems generating adequate power to be distributed to the public. The company said it generates more electricity than the country requires but blames GRIDCO which transmits electricity and the ECG which is responsible for power distribution for the incessant power interruptions. The two companies, GRIDCO and ECG blamed each other for the problems. GRIDCO complained that when it detects faults and draws the attention of ECG, it does not respond quickly. But ECG rejected the claim, arguing that GRIDCO usually does not inform it in good time when there are problems such as the breaking down of a transformer. GRIDCO further explained that anytime one of its three main distribution lines develops a fault, too much pressure is put on the remaining two and by the time that problem is resolved, the undue pressure would have resulted in the break down of another line. Whiles the two accuse each other, consumer associations that attended the meeting were not enthused by the litany of explanations given by the utility providers, describing the excuses as lame.
