The former Deputy Minister of Information, Mr Frank Agyekum, is expected to report to the Bureau of National Investigation (BNI) on Thursday for discussions. The reason for his invitation is sketchy, but family sources told Joy News that the now spokesperson for former President J. A. Kufuor would probable spend less time with the Bureau. However, media reports say the Mr Agyekum is expected to answer questions on a GH¢86,915.85 (¢869 million) contract he awarded to Plexiform Ventures for the renovation of the offices of the Information Minister and his deputy and the washroom of the ministry. The state owned Daily Graphic says although some portions of the work, which involved the fixing of new floor tiles were done, the manner in which the Chief Director of the Ministry, Mr D. A. Y. Sampong wrote a letter to the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning, dated May 29, 2009, without the knowledge of the substantive Minister, Mrs Zita Okaikoi, raised suspicion.Mr Sampong, the Deputy Finance and Administration Director identified only as Mr Denkyira and the Principal Accountant of the ministry, Mr Lawrence Dzakpaa, have already been quizzed by the BNI.Mr Agyekum’s call comes in less than two weeks when the former Chief of Staff, Mr Kwadwo Mpiani, was invited by the BNI for a wide range of questioning. He (Mpiani) was subjected to about eleven and half hours of grilling on Tuesday, June 2, 2009; but spent lesser time with the Bureau the following day.The prolonged questioning hours he went through raised eye brows among members of the opposition New Patriotic Party who criticized the government over unwarranted persecution. The state institution itself has come under barrage of disparagement from some human rights advocates who think the BNI is more or less abusing its powers with respect to the way it treats people. In a related development, Mr Sammy Crabbe, Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the NPP, has also been invited by the BNI to answer questions on the beleaguered Ghana International Airlines.Story by Isaac Essel/Myjoyonline.com
