Isaac Afrane, an 18-year-old Junior High School student has been put before the Asamankese Circuit Court charged with unlawful entry into a shop and stealing items valued at GH¢625,095.
Afrane pleaded guilty but said he stole a few items and not the large quantity of goods the prosecutor claimed he stole from the shop of Mr George Obeng.
Police Chief Inspector Kate Ogyiri told the court that Mr Obeng had a shop at the Asamankese market and that had experienced thefts in recent times.
She said the shop owner therefore decided to mount a surveillance and at about 0030 hours on June 25 he caught the accused stealing some provisions and arrested him and sent him to the police station.
The prosecutor said Afrane admitted the offence and when the police visited the shop they found that the accused removed a cement block at the back of the store to gain access.
She said Mr Obeng produced a long list of items the accused allegedly stole.
These include 400 bags of rice, 20 bags of sugar, 45 crates of Ideal milk, 20 boxes of Milo, 25 boxes of Chocolim, 10 boxes of Richoco, 50 boxes of dressed chicken. The items had a total value of GHC 625, 09.
The court remanded the accused in prison custody until June 24.
