Dozens of markets centres across the Northern Region have been disinfected by the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development under the National Disinfection Exercise.
The exercise was done in partnership with waste management company, Zoomlion Ghana Limited, as part of an effort to counter the spread of the coronavirus pandemic in the country.
The exercise was also to protect traders against other infections and diseases.
The exercise which started at 6: 30 a.m. had three teams dispatched to various market centres in the region.
The Tamale event that marked the end of the northern sector exercise saw over 700 professional sprayers from Zoomlion spraying every corner of each market.
They used chlorine-based chemicals and smoke disinfectant machine for the disinfection.
Some of the notable markets sprayed in the Tamale municipality are Central market, Lamashegu market and Kukuo market.
Speaking before the commencement of the exercise the Northern Regional Minister, Salifu Saeed, praised the management of Zoomlion and the combined security personnel who led the exercise.
Mr Salifu Saeed said the government is taking the necessary measures that can help in ending the spread coronavirus.
“We are to ensure all the functional markets in our region should be sprayed and disinfected so that the potential viruses that can aid the spread of the pandemic will be eliminated,” said Mr Saeed.
He, therefore, advised residents to adhere to President Nana Akufo-Addo’s directive on social distancing and stay home.
However, traders and residents complied fully with the announcement that nobody should open shop.
