The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) is cautioning Ghanaians against the use and abuse of drugs such as Chloroquine, Hydroxychloroquine and Azithromycin in the treatment of Covid-19.
According to GMA, these drugs can affect the function of the heart by causing abnormal heartbeat, making it deadly to patients with Covid-19.
In a statement signed by the President of the Association, Dr Frank Ankobea said it is “therefore of utmost importance that individuals only take these medications on prescription and under medical supervision.”

The caution follows a similar one by the Association last month.
Speaking on ‘The Lockdown’ show on JoyNews in April, the General Secretary of the Ghana Medical Association, Dr. Justice Yankson had discarded the use of herbal medicine and concoctions to treat coronavirus.
According to Dr. Yankson, the herbal medicine can only be used if it is certified and must go through due process to be approved if not certified, otherwise, it can pose a threat to human health.
But in its latest caution, the Association said the listed drugs can not be used as prophylaxis or treatment without medical supervision.
