The Executive Director of the Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG), Dr. Emmanuel Akwetey has expressed worry about the seeming lack of communication from the Electoral Commission, less than a month to the compilation of a new voters' register
Interacting with Gifty Andoh Appiah and Roland Walker on the AM Show on JoyNews, Dr Akwetey insisted, the Commission at this opportune time, needs to encourage its top officers to communicate relevant information to the public to engender confidence in the impending registration exercise and create credibility for the programme.
According to Dr. Akwetey, "in 2012, 2016, we saw top officers… even the Chair of the Electoral Commission doing the communication and not only the bureaucrats."
His comments follow the piloting of a registration exercise to compile a new voters' register ahead of the December polls on Tuesday, June 2.
Touching on the initiative, the Governance expert chastised the Commission for the limited time frame assigned for the piloting.
He urged the Electoral Commission to increase the period for its pilot registration to enable it adequately detect anomalies usually associated with such exercises.
The Electoral Commission (EC) on Tuesday, June 2, conducted the first of its two-day piloting exercise in all 16 regional capitals of Ghana.
The essence of the exercise, according to the EC, is "to identify problems associated with the new voter registration system, as well as its effect under various weather conditions and find ways of mitigating them."
A statement issued on Tuesday said all issues identified would be forwarded to the Commission at the national level for the necessary rectifications to be made before the commencement of the exercise at the end of the month.
“All Ghanaian citizens of 18 years and above and of sound mind are expected to register where they reside when the exercise begins; with either a Ghanaian passport or Ghana card as proof of identification or have two guarantors who have already registered as voters so they can register,” the statement signed by Dr. Serebour Quarcor, the Electoral Commission's Director of Electoral Services read.
