A lecturer at the University for Development Studies (UDS), Navrongo Campus, Mr. Alhassan Issah, met his untimely death on Monday, when the taxi cab, in which he was travelling, collided head-on with a passenger Peugeot caravan at Sumbrungu near Bolgatanga.An eye witness told The Chronicle that the Astra Opel taxi, with registration number UE 8340W, was traveling from Navrongo to Bolgatanga.Shortly after Sumbrungu, there was a tractor parked by the road side, whose driver was assisting a motorist who had a flat tyre.According to the eyewitness, a Metro Mass Transit bus, with registration number GR 2031 U, which was also coming from Navrongo at top speed, hit the stationary tractor.In an attempt by the taxi driver to avoid running into the Metro bus, it veered off its lane and collided head-on with the Peugeot caravan, which was coming from the opposite direction (Bolgatanga side).The Upper East Regional Deputy Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) of the Ghana Police Service, ASP Seth Teye, said Mr. Issah was pronounced dead, shortly on arrival at the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital.Six other occupants of the taxi cab and Peugeot caravan, sustained various degrees of injuries, and were treated and discharged at the same hospital.Sources at the Regional Hospital said Mr. Issah died as a result of severe injuries he sustained on his head. According to the police, the late lecturer was a native of Tamale in the Northern Region, and lectured at the Navrongo Campus of the UDS.He was traveling to Bolgatanga, en route to Tamale, when the accident occurred.His body was released on Tuesday to his family for burial.With the exception of the Peugeot caravan, which could not be towed away, the tractor, with registration number GR 1838 Y, belonging to YABCO Company Limited, the metro bus, and the taxi cab, are currently parked at the regional MTTU office in Bolgatanga, while the police are continuing with their investigations into the cause of the accident.Some residents of Sunbrumgu said the scene of the latest accident, which was on a bridge, has recorded a number of accidents, expressing fear that it was becoming an accident-prone spot.Source: Chronilce
