The flagbearer for the opposition National Democratic Congress says assembly members must be intensely involved in the birth and death registration of their electoral area to end the periodic compilation voter’s register.
John Mahama in his digital interaction on Thursday said assembly members are the bedrock of the country’s local governance system so engaging them in the birth and death registration exercise will help solve the numerous issues surrounding birth and death registry in Ghana.
“Assembly members live in and know every house within their electoral areas so they know when children are born and when people die.
“Therefore, if we and make them responsible for birth and death registration, then for every child that is born, they will record the parents name and date of birth and other important information and will transmit it to the database of the district which will be linked up to the national birth and death registry,” he stated.
He further added, “So we will capture in no time, all children that are born and people who are dying so that this thing about having a new voter’s register will be a thing of the past because in real time we will know those who have turned 18, and just transfer them unto the electoral register.”
Former president Mahama further promised that, should he return to power come January 7, 2021, assembly members will be paid so that they can earn some income to make earns meet.
“This is going to be contained in our programme on governance and when we come into government,” he said.
