Celebrated broadcast journalist, Doreen Andoh, is celebrating her 25 years anniversary since she began working in the radio industry and with Joy FM.
Speaking to sit-in mystery host, Bola Ray on the Cosmopolitan Mix show, she said as a young girl of 22, radio broadcast was something she enjoyed doing but had not thought of making a career out of.
However, after an accident and a strike by university teachers, which prevented her from continuing her education, she joined Joy FM to start a new journey.
“Joy had been test transmitting for two months and I had a friend who had been doing jingles for Joy. I said to him ‘I wanna try this’ and he said ok and introduced me to Junior Twum (a cousin to Kwesi Twum, the CEO).”
“So, he brought me here one Wednesday and I was asked to read stories from a newspaper. I did. I had no training whatsoever…when I read it they asked me to come the next morning.”
Doreen Andoh said she was given the chance to read the midday news and had gotten applause for the work she had done.
The Queen of the Airwaves worked with veteran broadcaster Tommy Annang-Forson, Kofi Tsakpornou, the late Dusty Wayne, Gabby Adjetey, Cox Tamakloe, Mark Okraku Mantey, Kofi Kum Bilson and talented presenters brought a new face to radio when the airwaves were liberalised.
In June of 2001, Doreen received the Best Presenter of the Year Award – making her the first female to ever receive the award.
In March 2010, she was also crowned Queen of the Airwaves by Leading Ladies’ Network for inspiring many young women and also staying strong as one of the most prominent females in the radio industry.
She said that the station then was male dominated but she had to prove that she had not left her Pharmacy course in school to study Radio broadcasting “to be a nothing”.
“I am in a job place where there is a lot of men and I had to say you know what if you had to succeed you need to have your head up and I kept my head up.”
Doreen added that she took up the chance to host her signature show the Cosmopolitan Mix and has been hosting it since.
She told Bola Ray that not only was she glad to have found something she enjoyed doing but also unearth talents she did not know she had.
