Former President John Dramani Mahama has suspended his tour of some voters’ registration centres in the Greater Accra Region.
His decision to halt the activity hinges on what he believes are concerns over the adherence to safety protocols regarding the Covid-19 pandemic in the areas such as the practice of hand hygiene and the wearing of facemasks.
The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in a Facebook post explained that the low level of sensitisation at some of the centres in Accra and Tema makes it unfavourable for his team to continue the exercise for the time being.
“I have cut short my unannounced visit to some voter registration centres in Accra and Tema this afternoon. This is because of the very low awareness of the #COVID19 protocols including physical distancing and the wearing of masks,” the July 21 statement read.
Mr Mahama further encouraged authorities to accelerate the education of the public on the novel coronavirus to help contain the spread to ensure the success of the registration process.
“We have to step up public education on COVID-19 so that people can appreciate the risk reduction protocols,” he said.
On July 11, John Mahama toured some of the centres in parts of the Volta Region.
These include the Ho Central, Akatsi North, Agortime-Ziope, Akatsi South, Ketu North, Ketu South, and South Tongu constituencies.
