Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has said accusations of intimidation by security officials at some voters’ registration centres in the country must be investigated.
This comes on the back of a video making the rounds on social media, in which the General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia is seen arguing with military officers.
In the footage, Mr Nketia is overheard in a phone conversation saying that “We have chanced on some of the security officials intimidating people and we have the videos.
He also lamented that “soldiers are not part of the voters’ registration process and so they have no business blocking legitimate registrants who will go to register.”
Speaking on JoyNews’ Beyond The Lockdown Sunday, Mr Oppong Nkrumah confirmed that he has seen the said video.
He however said more clarity is needed to determine the way forward.
“We sighted these videos of the General Secretary of the NDC appearing to be in some heated exchanges and on the phone with some persons… It’s a bit unclear but it is one of those things that need to be investigated so that we have clarity of what is transpiring,” he told host Emefa Apawu.
The development comes a day after NDC flagbearer, John Mahama accused President Akufo-Addo of using ferocious means to disenfranchise people, particularly in the party’s strongholds.
Mr Mahama in a Facebook post on Saturday, said the Akufo-Addo administration is using the military and party thugs to prevent citizens who are Voltarians and non-Akans from applying to get a voters identification card.
“Executive power must not be used to foment ethnic discrimination and abuse as is happening under Nana Akufo-Addo.
“These calculated acts of “dehumanisation, disenfranchising Ghanaians and stripping them of their citizenship” must end,” he said.
