Vice-President at IMANI-Africa, Bright Simons says the claims by the Electoral Commission (EC) that there was no voter suppression during the compilation of the new register is false.
According to him, Ghanaians stuck outside the country have been disenfranchised because they were unable to come to the country to register due to the border closure.
“Every year out of the returnees that come to this country, about 400,000 of them are actually Ghanaians. A lot of those people come to register."
"Due to Covid-19 that number is missing on the register, those people were to come back sometime December like they used to do, they will not be able to vote,” Mr Simons said on Newsfile.
He stated that the EC’s notion that there is no voter suppression is not backed by facts adding that “they have spent 150million dollars achieving nothing.”
Mr Simons told Samson Lardy Anyenini, host of the show, that this voters' registration exercise was the most non-inclusive process the country has witnessed since the country returned to democratic rule.
"This has been the most divisive electoral process I have seen in my two decades of observing Ghanaian politics," he added.
According to him, the Commission has been insensitive to the views, attitudes, and concerns of stakeholders including medical doctors, civil society organisations and others.
He stated that it is the interest of the Commission to embark on a reconciliation exercise to rectify their errors and engage citizens on their concerns.
