Government says it has provided the needed resources for the Ghana Police Service to ensure that the 2020 election is peaceful.
This follows the constant reportage of numerous agitations between members of the two major political parties before and during the recently organised voters’ registration exercise.
The rival parties have not seen eye-to-eye over accusations by the NDC that the NPP may be conniving with the Electoral Commission (EC) to rig the elections due to the latter’s determination to collate a new voters’ register for the upcoming elections.
While many have expressed worry that the high level of mistrust among the electoral stakeholders in the country could undermine the management and credibility of the 2020 polls, the leadership of the political parties continue to assure of peace during the exercise.
Speaking during a sod-cutting ceremony for the construction of an FPU Headquarters and International Relations Directorate Office Complex for the Ghana Police Service, Minister for Interior, Ambrose Dery said government has put measures in place and therefore expects a violence-free election.
“Ahead of the elections, we need to be very clear about the various roles played. For the government, ours is to provide the facilities, give the resources and the operational matters are for the police.
"The IGP is the leader of all operational matters and the constitution has done it consciously so that the government does not interfere in operational matters. So it is for the IGP to handle that and you will realize that over the years when it comes to elections at the levels of the assembly, the Chief Executives are removed from the system and it is led by the District Commander.
“So what government has done is to provide the facility and as the IGP said, what we have done for the police is unprecedented,” he said.
Meanwhile, almost a week after the Electoral Commission completed its voters’ registration exercise, culprits responsible for violence, disturbance and unrest at some registration centres across the country are yet to be punished.
President Akufo-Addo is his latest address to the nation, charged the Ghana Police Service to deal with these perpetrators while condemning the violence that marred the process at some centres.
CODEO, together with other civil society groups have also argued that an arrest, together with a publication of the Police's findings during its investigations will bolster confidence in the security agencies and serve as a deterrent to others ahead of the December general elections.
