When the 1991 U17 World Championship was brought to an end, the Black Starlets lifted the coveted trophy for the first time in their history.
German tactician, Otto Pfister, imprinted his well-drilled 4-4-2 style which left opponents dazzled despite the huge inflow of talent from Brazil, Argentina and Italy.
A solitary goal from Emmanuel Duah against Spain ensured Ghana’s entry into the history books, signaling hope for football in the country.
The trophy, was Ghana's first ever international title and on its 29th anniversary, here are five key statistics from the squad.
- Nii Odartey Lamptey was the star of the team, clinching the golden ball. He also scored 4 goals in the showcase, the joint highest in the competition.
- The average age of the team was 16 years and 1 month. Sebastien Barnes was the youngest at 14 years whilst Mohammed Gargo was the oldest at 16 years.
- 16 of the 18-man squad called for the showcase were made up of local players. Isaac Asare and Nii Odartey Lamptey were both playing for Anderlecht at the time. Also, four players in the team were from Hearts of Oak.
- The Black Starlets won four and drew two matches overall (no losses). They also scored eight goals and conceded three.
- Samuel Osei Kuffour was one of the players in the squad who broke into the senior national team. He went on to become the BBC African footballer of the year in 2001.
