Flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress, John Dramani Mahama has pledged to fix the ailing economy under the Akufo-Addo government should he be given the nod on December 7.
Highlighting policies and initiatives the NDC will implement when it wins the 2020 general elections, former President Mahama said his second tenure will provide equal opportunity for all citizens regardless of their age, gender, political or religious affiliations.
“Ghana’s economy is not working for the people, it is working for a few. We will fix the economy and make it work for all Ghanaians,” he said.
Mr Mahama further took a jibe at President Nana Akufo-Addo and the ruling New Patriotic Party for vindictively shutting down local businesses.
This, he promised to restore and sustain by investing $10 billion under the ‘Big Push Agenda’ since local businesses are the cornerstone of national development.
He insisted the NDC has the experience to turn the current "dire economic situation" around to bring relief to the suffering masses in Ghana.
Stressing on past records of the NDC, the former President said, “We have done all this before. We ensured the most stable and prosperous period of economic management. We ensured the highest ever GDP growth rate. We ensured the longest sustained period of single-digit inflation in economic management in Ghana’s history.”
He then added that during his second term, prudent macroeconomic measures, anchored in sound management will be implemented to save the nation.
“We will bring the public debt under control. We will stabilise and strengthen the long-suffering cedi, reduce inflation, ensure a low tax regime and we will restore inclusive growth,” he promised.
