The Member of Parliament for the Odododiodo constituency, Nii Lante Vanderpuye has sent out a warning to his party followers not to show any favours to its member should they flout the law ahead of the 2020 elections.
As part of efforts to show the National Democratic Congress' (NDC) commitment to maintain peace, Mr Vanderpuye said he was ready to turn over any of his supporters who instigate violence in the area.
Speaking at an event held by the National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons to commit various political actors to peace on Tuesday, the Odododiodio legislator called for unity amongst constituents before, during and after the elections.
“I do this in the solemn believe that in this constituency we are a family and as such, I cannot see myself vandalising, brutalising and attacking any member of my family. I stand here to say that we in the NDC are committed to total peace,” he stated categorically.
“We stand here committing ourselves that any member of our party who will be involved in any violence, attack or activity that will disturb the peace, we will not hesitate to hand that person over to the appropriate authorities.”
Mr Vanderpuye also called for professionalism and impartiality from the Police Service as they discharge their duties this electoral year.
He insisted that the NDC will also contribute to maintaining the peace the country has enjoyed in the Fourth Republic.
On his part, the Executive Secretary of the National Commission on Small Arms, Jones Borteye Applerh urged political parties and their supporters to resolve their differences through dialogue and not with armed conflict.
Citing the recent clash between the NPP and NDC at Jamestown in the Odododiodio constituency, Mr Applerh explained that any conflict where small arms are introduced has incalculable repercussions.
In view of that, he advised political actors and their members to keep that in mind and desist from any willful acts of violence.
History of electoral violence in the Odododiodio constituency
In September 2016, a lady supporter of the NDC was stabbed at Bukom Square as chaos broke out during a political debate.
The supporters had gathered at the Bukom Square to cheer on their respective candidates who were taking part in a parliamentary debate organized by the Accra-based radio station, 3FM when tempers flared.
Several others from both parties sustained various degrees of injury.
The windscreens of at least two cars were also smashed, but no arrest was made.
In the most recent one, a peaceful walk turned violent when supporters of both NPP and NDC ended up hurling stones and other missiles at each other.
In a video sighted by MyJoyOnline.com, supporters of the two leading parties were hurling bottles at each other amidst the firing of gunshots.
At least 20 persons were injured in the clash whilst a building believed to be the NPP’s office was vandalized. So far, police have arrested two persons.
