The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) has begun providing relief items and temporary shelter to victims of the recent floods that hit parts of the metropolis.Heavy rains on Saturday night flooded parts of the capital especially Kaneshie and parts of Mateheko, killing six people with more people feared dead.The Public Relations Officer at NADMO, Major Retired Nicholas Mensah, told Joy News his organization together with its partners are putting measures in place to ensure that affected victims are adequately assisted.The disasterSeven persons were reported dead in Kaneshie and Mataheko, all suburbs of Accra, after heavy rains flooded parts of the capital on Friday evening.The deceased are four men and two women. The figure is expected to rise as a lot more people missing are feared dead or trapped somewhere.The intense rains, which lasted more than two hours, destroyed several properties including cars, homes, street lights and shops occupied by traders who operate in the area.The downpour has also rendered hundreds of people homeless.Joy News checks at the area revealed that one part of the main Kaneshie highway street has also developed cracks, as a result of the rains, causing traffic buildup.The Greater Accra Regional Police Commander, DCOP Rose Atinga, on Saturday morning led a team of police personnel to assess the extent of damage in the area.Some of the affected persons lamented and recounted their loss to Joy News.“I came here this morning to open my shop only to find out that it has been flooded. We are clearing the place now to assess the damage caused,” an affected shop owner told Joy News.Some also called on city authorities to expand the drainage systems in the area.Source: Myjoyonline.com
