Editor of the Daily Dispatch newspaper, Benjamin Emmanuel Ephson, says the unfortunate death of former President Jerry John Rawlings is likely to affect the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the upcoming Presidential and Parliamentary elections.
According to the pollster, the ideological diversities between the former President and the current flagbearer of the NDC, John Mahama, juxtaposed with the relationship that was established between Mr. Rawlings and President Akufo-Addo might influence the choice of voters come December 7.
Speaking to Joy News in an interview last Thursday, Mr. Ephson projected an "interesting" turn of events, following the demise of Jerry John Rawlings.
“I think that the next two to three weeks will be interesting, whether the support base of Rawlings will vote for NDC or some might vote for NPP,” he stated.
Mr Ephson's comments follow several speculations about the fate of Ghana’s impending elections, especially regarding sympathy votes in favour of the NDC following the loss of their founder, Jerry John Rawlings.
Mr. Rawlings died on Thursday, November 12, at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital after being on admission over a short illness.
He was 73 years old.
The former military leader ruled the country from 1981 to 2001 and also for a brief period in 1979.
He led a military junta until 1992, and then served two terms as the democratically elected President of Ghana.
