Editor-In-Chief of the New Crusading Guide, Abdul Malik Kweku Baako says he is saddened by the decision of the former Special Prosecutor, Martin Amidu to resign from his position.
Discussing the fallout from Mr Amidu’s resignation on Joy FM’s Newfile Saturday, Mr Baako said the former Special Prosecutor needed to exercise a little more patience and self-restraint at his post in order to do his job.
In his view, Mr Amidu’s reasons to have left his post should have rather incited him to stay and fight the corruption in the country’s system.
“My disappointment is that based on that reasoning he exits the office. As a full advocate of his nomination and appointment, I will not even say with a benefit of hind side of regret that I wish he should have stayed on.
“Those reasons he has given are the reasons that I would have loved if he stayed on and prove in practice the independence of that creature of law and his own mettle, his own courage of conviction. You don’t leave at this time when indeed you say you have so many things to work on,” he said.
Martin Amidu on Monday tendered in a letter to resign from his post as Special Prosecutor following his appointment in 2018.
According to Mr Amidu, President Akufo-Addo was attempting to make him a “poodle” of his government and since he [Amidu] is an honourable man and a person of integrity he will refuse to let himself be compromised by partisan influence.
But Mr Baako stressed his exit will be a disservice to the country.
“The Martin I know, is a man of courage. You may have differences with him in terms of temperament and all, it is true. None of us are perfect or infallible. But I still think he should have stayed on, investigated those matters and get them prosecuted. To help the country’s democratic consolidation,” he said.
He was, however, optimistic that the appointed interim Special Prosecutor, Cynthia Lamptey will equally execute the job as stated in the constitution.
