Executive Director for the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), Sulemana Braimah says the National Media Commission (NMC) has failed to ensure that the media in Ghana attains its highest professional standards.
According to him, this is because most media organisations do not uphold media ethics due to their affiliation with political parties.
This, he says, creates an atmosphere for propaganda and misinformation.
“We are in a situation where some people are clung to fame, it’s been how much they were able to insult their opponent during the campaign," he said.
Mr. Braimah stated that the NMC has a huge role to ensure the media and journalists uphold professionalism but claimed that they (NMC) are unable to do that.
“Some people have used the media in a toxic manner to set their record to secure government appointments within this government and in the previous government.
"They are people that we sited as being very abusive and using toxic language and they end up securing appointments after their election victories," he added.
Speaking with JoyNews' Ayisha Ibrahim, Mr Braimah stated that “The only contribution one can say they made is how much they were able to abuse their opponents."
Mr. Braimah urged the media to educate themselves about the professionalism talked about and desist from crusading for political parties to come to power.
