Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin has condemned the actions of MPs that led to the chaos during his election on Thursday, January 6.
"I would be remiss if I did not express my deepest regret, both as a former Member of this Parliament and a citizen of this great Nation, at the rather unruly behavior and commotion that took place on the floor of this House last week," he stated.
Describing it as “despicable conduct” unbecoming of members of the House, Mr Bagbin promised to ensure that the unjustifiable incident on that day will never be repeated during his tenure as Speaker.
"It was, to put it mildly, despicable conduct unbecoming of people of honor.
“What makes it worse is the total absence of justification or reasonable excuse. As Speaker, I will like to believe that the spectacle of that historic day would not be repeated, certainly not on my watch,” Mr Bagbin said.
He added that it is important MPs are guided by their ambitions, goals and principles to ensure optimum performance in the House.
On January 7, Ghanaians watched in dismay for hours as elected MPs displayed behaviours widely condemned as infantile and indecent during the election of the House’s Speaker.
After the initial shock over the NDC MPs occupying the majority side of Parliament, the House was again thrown into disarray when the legitimacy of the Assin North MP-elect, James Gyakye Quayson.
The appearance of an armed military team in the chamber and the decision by the Tema West MP, Carlos Ahenkorah to snatch some ballot papers led to punches being thrown, and insults hurled at each other.
While some have described the actions by the MPs as “distasteful and disgraceful”, others have called for investigations and subsequent sanctions to be meted out to any MP found culpable.
Addressing parliament, the Speaker said, “I take a strong exception to such conduct and behaviour and I urge leadership to stake a serious view of it and take the necessary measures to restore, the lost dignity of this house.”
He told the House that he will not be a Speaker that favours one side of the House but one that ensures the interest of the people is taken care of.
Thus, he expects MPs to be on their best behaviour while conducting their business in Parliament, Mr Bagbin added.
