The Kaneshie Division Police Motor Transport and Traffic Directorate (MTTD) has observed that the non-compliance of Covid-19 safety protocols especially by the youth is as a result of their assumed resilience to the virus.
Supt Elvis Bawa Sadongo said although it has been noted that people with pre-existing medical conditions as well as older people are more susceptible to the disease than younger people, reports have proven that the new variant recorded in the country affects both the young and old.
He, therefore, asked for more education on the new variant and advised the youth to keep their guards up against the virus.
“The youth, in particular, are not in compliance and that is because of the information that was available in the earlier variant of the Covid that for the youth, younger people and children that particular variant was very lenient on them.”
“Now since we got into contention with another variant, we don’t seem to be sending out enough message for the youth to understand that times have changed and that this times babies can be infected and it can be fatal”
His comment comes on the back of the increasing number of Ghana’s Covid-19 case count due to the failure of adhering to the safety protocols.
Recently, the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in the Ashanti Region has recorded an upsurge of Covid-19 cases among children.
Nine children in the facility tested positive for the novel coronavirus. While the youngest among them was an 11-day-old baby, the oldest was 14 years.
A recent update by the Ghana Health Service (GHS) as of January 27, reported that 28 more persons have died from Covid-19 as the country records 797 new infections.
This brings the death toll to 405 and 4,665 active cases.
Supt Sadongo reiterated the need for education on the new variant, seeing as the youth tend to be more social in their activities and may unknowingly transmit the disease to their parents.
He, therefore, advised parents to protect themselves and "even young infants who are born today including older children that are under their care."
