The Minister-designate for Roads and Highways, Kwasi Amoako-Atta has disclosed that government will recruit more Persons with Disability (PWDs) to collect road tolls.
According to the Minister, the current allocation of 50% of PWDs collecting the tolls is expected to be increased to over 70%.
The Ministry, in February, 2020 engaged the first batch of 74 PWDs to work at tollbooths across the country and additional 126 was expected be engaged later.
The move, according to the Minister of Roads and Highways-designate, Kwasi Amoako-Atta, is in line with an initiative by the government to create employment opportunities for PWDs in ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs).
“We have close to 1 million Persons with Disability in the country, and they must also earn a living like all of us and they are entitled to it like all of us. That is why government under President Akufo-Addo made it possible for them to be employed at the toll booth because the services and the work suit their physical condition.
“As of now, we have close to 50% of PWD working in the sector. It is, however, regrettable that some of them are not being treated fairly, that cannot be tolerated. And we are even determined to push the percentage to 70%,” he said.
Commenting on toll rate, Mr Amoako-Atta hinted that a proposal will be submitted to Cabinet to increase road tolls paid by drivers in the country.
According to the Minister, an increment will enable government to mobilise the needed resources for road infrastructural development.
“Are people prepared to pay more to get good roads or they should get good roads before they pay? Will Ghanaians be willing to pay more as we are seeing in other parts of the world?
“Ghanaians should be prepared to pay for good roads,” he stated.
