Leg crutches have always been a great support system for persons with mobility challenges. The crutches, however, come with a lot of discomforts.
To make it more comfortable to use, a senior clinical engineer at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) has invented a sandal crutch.

Engineer Emmanuel Wireko-Brobby says he was inspired after observing the suffering persons with disability go through.
He said the sandal crutch will help the physically challenged to carry out their normal duties without difficulty.
“I have been meeting people with disability and I have been trying hard to find out how best to come out with something to them.
“I designed this help people who have difficulty in walking especially the physically challenged.
“This will help them carry out their normal duties without difficulty,” he said.
The sandal is attached to a rope and woodwork which is supported with a metal strip to hold it tight. This will strengthen the leg making movement easy.
“The sandals are attached with a rope and woodwork as well as a metal strip to hold it tight. This invention will help take away the discomfort of crutches” he noted.
To support people with weak bones, the second crutch provides support around the knee level between the knee and the thigh.
According to the engineer, this is the first of its kind.
“To support people with weak bones I invented this. This will support the knee and the thigh. It goes along with a walking stick.
“With this climbing of stairs is very easy and going about with your normal duties is very easy,” he stressed
