Former President John Dramani Mahama is urging Ghanaians to come together to work and build the nation.
His request is in line with Ghana celebrating 64 years of independence after British colonial rule.
In a brief message to Ghanaians on Saturday, March 6, Mr Mahama said “We have only one nation, Ghana and we must work together to ensure progress and growth of our dear nation. We can only do this if we ensure equality, freedom and justice for all our citizens.”
Although the nation made some changes in its annual celebration due to the Covid-19 pandemic, a national event was held at the Jubilee House, which was attended by President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
Also addressing the nation, President Akufo-Addo admonished the entire citizenry to be resolute in ensuring a self-sufficient country in the next years to come.
According to the President, Ghana remains the beacon of hope for Africa hence must work to live up to expectation.
"We were the first nation in colonial Africa to gain our independence from colonial power. The mood of citizens of this new state was one of unrestrained excitement and jubilation because of the prospects of what the future held for us.
"We were an example for the rest of Africa to follow," he said.
He added: “Fellow Ghanaians, this is not beyond us. If we put our hearts and minds to it, we who were the first to gain our independence in colonial Africa can make it and protect our heritage and environment,”
Despite several limitations the coronavirus has presented, many Ghanaians also took to the various social media platforms to celebrate many years of independence and the role the country has played in Africa's development.
