Political Science lecturer at the University of Ghana has raised concerns regarding the limited representation of women in President Akufo-Addo's deputy ministerial list to Speaker Alban Bagbin.

According to Prof Ransford Gyampo, appointing more females will motivate younger women to brace themselves up for leadership positions.

President Akufo-Addo on Wednesday submitted 39 names including 10 females to the Speaker, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin as his deputy ministerial nominees for Parliament approval.

But speaking on JoyNews' The Pulse, Prof Gyampo opined that the President missed out on an opportunity to leave a legacy by his male-dominant list.

“I was thinking going forward and wanting to leave a legacy in the psyche of many Ghanaians he would have brought a lot of women to the fore but this hasn’t been done, maybe I don’t know whether this time he will do more reshuffles so that he brings more women and give women in to further advance the quest to ensure that women take their rightful place in decision-making and politics,” he told host Gifty Andoh-Appiah.

The Professor added that it is the mandate of the President to select those he wants to work with adding that, "when there are blames" he will take it.

Prof Gyampo, however, lauded the President for reducing the number of nominees for both ministerial and deputy appointments.

“The point I want to make is that I am happy that at the minimum Akufo-Addo is supposed to do things drastically that would help him leave a lasting legacy for Ghana as he goes for the second term and one of the drastic things that I was expecting that he would do will be that he would reduce the size of his government and for me he has done that,” he said.

The female deputy ministers-designate include Gifty Twum-Ampofo - Education; Abena Osei-Asare -Finance; Nana Dokua Asiamah Adjei - Trade and Industry; Fatimatu Abubakar - Information; Diana Asonaba Dapaah - Office of Attorney General & Ministry of Justice; and Tina Gifty Mensah - Health; Mavis Nkansah-Boadu - Roads & Highways; Naana Eyiah Quansah - Interior; Ama Pomaa Boateng - Communications & Digitalisation; and Lariba Zuweira Abudu - Gender, Children & Social Protection.
