The Ghana Medical Association has called on the Attorney General and the police to swiftly prosecute the organisers of Christ Embassy’s ‘Pneumatica Night 2021’ conference held on April 30.
According to the GMA, health workers cannot continue to risk their lives while such disregard for the Covid-19 safety protocols goes unchecked.
In a press statement signed by its President Frank Ankobea, the GMA believes a swift prosecution will serve as a deterrent to others who intend to organise events of such magnitude.
“The videos and pictures from this church event defy all logic especially during this crucial time of the Covid-19 pandemic. This activity clearly goes contrary to all laid down Covid-19 prevention protocols and laws by government,” the association stated in a press release.
The GMA believes that the actions of the organisers and the attendees of the church defeats the efforts being made to prevent a third wave and essentially defeat Covid-19.
They added that it is also a threat to people’s lives especially medical doctors and other health workers who will be expected to cater for Covid-19 patients if things go agog.
“The GMA strongly condemns this behaviour by the leadership, organisers and members of the Christ Embassy Chruch Ghana. Their unlawful act will set a bad example for others to follow. A swift prosecution will serve as a deterrent to all.”
This statement comes days after it went viral that the youth wing of the Christ Embassy Church in Ghana organised a conference dubbed Pneumatica Night 2021 at the Fantasy Dome, Trade Fair Centre on Friday, April 30, 2021.
Photos and videos from the night showed people worshipping without face masks and the seating arrangement in total disregard of the state-directed social distancing protocols.
The Ghana Police Service after the photos went viral stated that it had launched an investigation into the organization of the church conference.
“The event, advertised as a Church Service which ordinarily did not require notice under the Public Order Act, was organized at the blind side of the Police. Police have since Sunday morning locked up the Fantasy Dome and have started questioning leaders of the Church and Management of the Fantasy Dome about the event.”
The Ghana Police Service added that any person found culpable during the investigation will be arrested and made to face prosecution.
The GMA in their statement is asking for all persons involved including the owners of the Fantasy Dome, the leadership of the Christ Embassy Church Ghana and the organisers of the event to face the law.
“The GMA also urges religious bodies in the country to ensure that all Covid-19 protocols are strictly observed during their activities.”
They called on the government to not hesitate to close down any religious facility whose activities breaches the law.
They also called for strict enforcement of the safety protocols and all the laws without fear or favour especially since there is a struggle to get vaccines for the population.
