Samson’s Take: Love, our laws do better

Ghana law is full of love yet often implemented with an attitude of hate and wickedness. Even the constitution commands all of us to act with love for one another and our country. It commands our leaders to act in our welfare and ensure a sound and healthy economy where citizens are prosperous and happy.

It requires kindness and special care for women and the vulnerable. I sat in court this week and saw a judge hand only a fine of 2,400 or 12 months in jail to a young man who could have been paying 20 times that amount or 25 years in jail.

Though he was guilty of three separate serious offences, the judge, Adelaide Abui Keddey, considered the circumstances of his involvement as a truly remorseful accomplice perhaps by mistake who deserved a second chance.

We are products of love. I am happy to be on a body sponsored by the IGP to spread love. Love keeps our society happy with less or no crime. The police have a duty to prevent crime, but the state punishes crime through the court.

I wish the state will actively advocate and teach the law to all so our attitudes and behaviours will reflect our laws. A country’s laws reflect its people just as the constitution reflects our norms, hopes and aspirations. It’s never late, and the job must not be left to a moral society. The home is where a true love revolution starts.

This is how I start my campaign as an ambassador of the IGP’s Stop Domestic Abuse campaign. Good to have the former and sitting First Ladies join the campaign. I suppose you didn’t know that depriving your dependents, spouse, family, house help, girlfriend etc., of adequate food, water, shelter, clothing or rest is also domestic violence punishable by up to two years in jail.

Yes, we passed the law (Domestic Violence Act) in 2007. It requires us the 1 Corinthians 13:4 kind of love so that verbal abuse, including making your spouse, child, etc., constantly feel unhappy, is a crime of domestic violence. That’s your legal light. Love conquers all. Let’s continue next week. #Stop domestic abuse now.
