Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu says President Akufo-Addo's agenda of achieving a Ghana Beyond Aid is a lost cause.
The Tamale South MP, at a press brief, Wednesday, May 31, 2021, charged the President to focus on addressing challenges resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic and forget about the 'Ghana beyond Aid' agenda since it is unattainable by the end of the full term of the Akufo-Addo administration.
"He cannot achieve a Ghana beyond aid within the 3 and half years left but a Ghana beyond Covid, I'm sure he'll be able to achieve," he said.
The MP was speaking at a press conference by the leadership of Parliament to update the public on its activities as it resumes from recess.
Background
President Akufo-Addo, prior to assuming office, had hopes of transforming Ghana into a prosperous and self-confident country before leaving office. This was to be achieved through various policies and programmes implemented by the government, under the Ghana Beyond Aid agenda.
Haruna's take on Ghana Beyond Aid
During the address, the MP was emphatic that this goal is unattainable, considering the state of the economy and the time left for the President to leave office.
He raised concern over other pertinent issues bothering the country and charged the President to be up and doing in addressing these concerns.
"...I have no hesitation calling on President Akufo-Addo, knowing that he has only three and half years now as a mandate to be President of Ghana, to focus on Ghana beyond Covid and not Ghana beyond aid," he said.
He further accused the government of dragging the country into a state of bankruptcy, stating that "we are broke as a country."
Also, the MP, on behalf of the Minority in Parliament demanded accountability in the fight against illegal mining, popularly known as 'galamsey.'
He asked the President to direct much of his focus on fighting the menace than issue commands to burn excavators since he is not mandated by the Constitution to do so.
