Some traders at Makola Market are asking government to speed up the clearing of the debris from the demolished structures which were ravaged by fire last month.

The military cordoned off the area to pull down the over 80 structures which were affected by the inferno.

But the traders say the areas which have been cordoned off have had a negative impact on their businesses.

Some of them who spoke to JoyNews say a further delay in clearing up the debris would make it impossible for them to fend for their families.

“We came to meet our tables dismantled, we don’t know when we will be allowed to come back to trade since they are asking us to leave. We have debts to pay and debtors are on our necks.

“Going home is going to be a problem for us because we don’t even have transport. We did not find out about the demolishing in time.

“We call on leaders of the country to speed up with the clearing of the debris latest by Wednesday to enable us set up for trade,“ a trader lamented.

Another trader who sells wedding clips also said: “We didn’t know we will be affected so we came hoping we could set up a meter from the burnt place but we came to meet our tables dismantled and seized by Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) so we are reassembling the seats hoping to return tomorrow."

“I am a single parent with three boys, I don’t know how to see them to school tomorrow because I couldn't set up to trade today, " says one of the traders who identified herself as Auntie Paulina.
